The day only computers will understand CAPTCHA
Posted by: | Comments
It’s starting to get annoying and I’m talking about CAPTCHA. What is CAPTCHA? It’s the little annoying ‘text’ images you see all around the place when you register/sign up to something on the Internet. It usually looks like the images around.

I’m really sick of all that CAPTCHA thing as I think it’s really ruining the user experience and most users don’t really understand the use of it. So what is it for really? CAPTCHA is actually a technology to detect if the user is a human or a computer. Without that kind of technology, it would be easier for someone to develop a software that could automatically create accounts on Hotmail or Gmail for example. With that kind of image, it’s hard to write a program that can detect the text in it. So this way, you ensure the sign up comes from a human being. The problem is that it’s affecting everyone and most people don’t give a damn about automated sign ups. They just want to register to a service without the pain of having to guess what the text inside the image is.
Let’s face it, it’s not always easy to guess what’s in the CAPTCHA image. It’s not rare to try 2 or three times without success and it’s really frustrating. The problem is that CAPTCHA is becoming more and more complex to read because of people being able to develop software capable of reading complex CAPTCHAs. Soon enough, you’ll need a computer to decode the true meaning of CAPTCHA, no longer the human will be able to read and decode it. That kind of spoil the whole purpose of CAPTCHA…
Lets all agree, CAPTCHA is a pain. There’s a big need for something better and not annoying for the regular end user who doesn’t give a damn about automated sign ups. At least, Google understood and has a readable and uncrackable CAPTCHA text. It’s still a really annoying piece of technology but a company is making a step forward to a better CAPTCHA.
UFOs - India Daily and How to write BS
Posted by: | Comments
An interesting article has surfaced yesterday on India Daily. Their ability to write BS is awesome. Before quoting the article, I remind you that India Daily is in the top 100,000 (53,781 today) visited websites according to Alexa, meaning millions of people are reading articles and “news” on that site every year. The article is quite short so let’s post the complete article:
All of us are focused on identifying the large visible extraterrestrial UFOs. These UFOs are not easy to locate as they use gravity waves and electromagnetic flux for creating effecting shield. The shields make them effectively invisible with our terrestrial technologies. The technology of stealth is much superior in nature.
However, there are many micro level UFOs and Unidentified Submerged Objects (USOs) that hover our atmosphere and under ocean water of extraterrestrial origin. These micro UFOs and USOs forms the basis of collecting information on our earth for the advanced extraterrestrial civilizations.
The micro UFOs have life forms. They multiply and evolve just like any other life forms in the earth. Their organic nature makes it impossible for us to be able to recognize them. These micro UFOs and USOs collect information on a daily basis and transmit the same to the extraterrestrial organizations.
What the hell?
They write things in a way you can’t deny it. There’s no evidence of what they say, no proofs or anything but still, you have to believe it. I see people coming miles away saying:
- “UFOs do exist, you can’t deny it!” -> Maybe, who am I to say it doesn’t exist?
- “UFOs are among us!” -> Maybe, who am I to say they’re not?
- “UFOs blah blah blah” -> Maybe, who am I to blah blah blah
You get the idea. I’m not writing this to discredit UFOs existence, I write it because the article is ridiculous. Why is it ridiculous? Take the first sentence for instance:
All of us are focused on identifying the large visible extraterrestrial UFOs.
I’m sorry, but no. Not all of us are focused on identifying the large visible extraterrestrial UFOs. That’s the art of creating a “Fake hype” for something that simply doesn’t have any.
These UFOs are not easy to locate as they use gravity waves and electromagnetic flux for creating effecting shield. The shields make them effectively invisible with our terrestrial technologies. The technology of stealth is much superior in nature.
Who the hell are you to comment on something that is invisible to our terrestrial technologies? Have you located any and analyzed their technology? I don’t say it’s false, I just call it disinformation. It’s written like if it was the absolute truth.
The micro UFOs have life forms. They multiply and evolve just like any other life forms in the earth. Their organic nature makes it impossible for us to be able to recognize them. These micro UFOs and USOs collect information on a daily basis and transmit the same to the extraterrestrial organizations.
Please. They multiply and evolves and are impossible to recognize. Again, does India Daily have special relations with the extraterrestrial organizations to know that information? Of course, extraterrestrial organizations have invisible life forms on earth but they inform us of it? That kind of spoil the whole purpose of having unrecognizable organisms living among us. Then, they collect information on a daily basis and transmit it to extraterrestrial organizations. I don’t even want to comment.
That’s simply another great disinformation article from India Daily. I love their way of writing things. It’s just: That’s the way it is and just the fact of writing it proves it.
You can always write bullshit without justifying but as soon as you get into science, people are firing from everywhere if your arguments aren’t good enough. Logic? None. That’s why India Daily is so popular…And a piece of crap.
How to Avoid Internet scams
Posted by: | CommentsI’ve seen numerous persons being scammed on the Internet and it always surprised me a bit. I agree the Internet has changed the way we think and no longer do we need to leave our homes to go shopping or find the information we need. We can surf the net and shop from the convenience of our homes. But with this has come some risks. There’s risks when you shop, when you sign up on a website and even just when surfing the Web.
Number one trick - Spyware and virus
Spyware is computer software that is installed surreptitiously on a personal computer to intercept or take partial control over the user’s interaction with the computer, without the user’s informed consent.
Spyware are installed on your computer just by browsing the Web without you knowing. These spywares then gather informations about what you do with your computer, like what sites you visit, what do you search for, etc. It is very important to get rid of those as it’s a pure and simple invasion of your privacy. The same way, you have to avoid viruses. You’ll get infected by viruses usually by downloading something from an unsafe website.
How do you prevent spyware and virus ruining your Internet experience? Simply get a good Spyware remover and an Anti virus. Don’t want to pay for it, but still want the best tools? Get the Google pack! With Google pack you get a free lifetime version of Norton with a free spyware protection tool, it’s definitely worth the download! And it’s a safe download from Google…Download it with this link button:
Number two trick - Be a safe buyer
It is important you buy from reliable websites. There’s obviously websites you can trust buying from like amazon.com, apple.com, etc. but what about less known sites? Before buying always do a search on Google for reviews on the website you want to buy from. There’s a ton of websites actually collecting customers’ feedback about their purchase online. If it’s a reliable website, you will most likely find information and reviews on it. You’ll be able to read about other persons experience and take a decision.
If you buy on eBay or similar online auction website, always make sure the person you buy from has a near 100% positive feedback.
Number three trick - Pay with paypal when you can
Paypal is an e-commerce business allowing payments and money transfers to be made through the Internet. It serves as an electronic alternative to traditional paper methods such as cheques and money orders. PayPal performs payment processing for online vendors, auction sites, and other corporate users [...]
When you can pay through Paypal, do it. If you don’t know how it works, it’s pretty simple: You give your credit card or account information to paypal and then you can pay other persons/companies through Paypal. It’s actually like if you were paying Paypal and then Paypal giving the money to the seller. This way the seller never get you credit information, only Paypal has it. Paypal is really safe and is the most used payment service on the Internet. It’s actually owned by eBay so you can use it with confidence. This is a nice way to avoid your credit information being spread all over the Internet.
Number four trick - Get information
Never sign up for anything without knowing the website reputation. Whether it’s for a work at home website or anything like that, make your own research with Google before giving any personal information. If it’s a scam you’ll find about it and if it’s not you’ll also find out. It’s really easy. There’s tons of forums out there and Google is your best friend!
Happy safe surfing!
2012 And Jumping To Conslusions
Posted by: | CommentsMy articles about 2012, planet X and pole shift are extremely populars and people really like them. I mostly received really good comments and I’m really happy about it. Sometimes, when I receive a “more negative” comment, it’s about my ability to apparently jump to conclusion too fast. I’m quite surprised because in all my articles I usually mention that no one holds the truth and we can’t be sure of anything. I provide opinions backed by scientific data and it’s usually a far more solid proof than any other doomsday theory articles you will find on the Internet.
I don’t consider having the truth or jumping to any conclusions. In fact, I find it quite funny that we usually accuse science to jump to conclusions too fast when we let doomsday prophets jump to conclusions without even asking a damn question. For the same reason I can’t jump to conclusions, 2012 prophets should not and trust me, they jump faster than me. There’s no negotiation with them while I think I can understand both sides. I respect people believing in that kind of stuff because I welcome different opinions: different opinions are good. What I’m trying to prove with my articles is that following scientific facts (We all agree that science is driving our world and is the most concrete thing we have to explain what’s around us), this 2012 stuff is losing a lot of credibility. Is rationality the only way of seeing life? Definitely not and thank God. But in times of fear, being rational really helps.
Why did I write these articles? People are scared to death. Trust me, I’ve received comments from people that couldn’t sleep or even go to work because of the 2012 propaganda. I respect people having different opinions and believing in the end of the world in 2012, but creating a climate of fear is not acceptable. You know how we kill a climate of fear? Information. I didn’t just write that to make people feel good, I wrote it because I do strongly believe nothing will happen in 2012 and because most scientific facts are pointing the same direction I am. I’m trying to put a bit of rationality in all that fear propaganda. Everyone is free to do what they want with the information I provide.
There’s one important thing we all have to understand: People are making a shit load of money with 2012. Books, TV shows, etc. It has always been like that and it will always be like that. Now you may say: well you’ve got Ads on your website and you make money with that. Totally true, but my blog is not only about 2012, it’s an information blog. But anyway, what’s best: Making a shit load of money by creating a climate of fear and making people scared to death and miss days of work because of that OR making not so much money and provide real scientific evidence that we have no proof the end of the world is going to end in 2012? I write this blog because I love it and I like to inform people about real life matters. I think it’s fair.
I feel really good with my articles because I’ve received tons of emails from people thanking me about it. I’ve changed a couple of persons’ life in a good way and that makes me feel good. When I go to bed at night, it’s nice to know I’ve had a positive impact on people’s life. I couldn’t sleep telling people the world will end in 2012: I just can’t deal with that. Especially when there’s not a single proof.
I would like to say that I think we will put an end to our own world before any doomsday prophecy comes true. But, you know, I’m not God and anything can happen. Only time will tell…
Google comment on Microsoft’s “hostile” bid for Yahoo!
Posted by: | Comments
An interesting post was published today on Google’s official blog and it’s written by
So Microsoft’s hostile bid for Yahoo! raises troubling questions. This is about more than simply a financial transaction, one company taking over another. It’s about preserving the underlying principles of the Internet: openness and innovation.
Could Microsoft now attempt to exert the same sort of inappropriate and illegal influence over the Internet that it did with the PC? While the Internet rewards competitive innovation, Microsoft has frequently sought to establish proprietary monopolies — and then leverage its dominance into new, adjacent markets.
I encourage you to read the full post here: Yahoo! and the future of the Internet
Of course Microsoft answered to that and it’s quite a reasonable answer. In a statement, Microsoft lawyer Brad Smith said:
The combination of Microsoft and Yahoo will create a more competitive marketplace by establishing a compelling number two competitor for Internet search and online advertising, the alternative scenarios only lead to less competition on the Internet.
Smith argues that Google already has three-quarters of the paid search market and about two-thirds of U.S. search queries and 85 percent in Europe.
While I really like Google as a company and a service, I find it quite strange that they publicly criticize the potential deal between Yahoo! and Microsoft. I must say I agree with Microsoft’s answer. Since Yahoo! received the offer from Microsoft, it considered a partnership with Google and I don’t see it to be a better thing. That would obviously raise important antitrust issues and they would have to play with the definition of “partnership” for that to happen. Google has a fixation on Microsoft and while it’s really funny that they go out publicly and say Microsoft is evil, they have to be careful with that. Google is now one of the biggest company with a lot of influence on the way information is spread and they have to act like it.
Overall, the best thing for everyone is not Yahoo! to be bought by anyone. With a Microsoft deal you get that Microsoft philosophy being the biggest Internet portal and I don’t like it. On the other hand you get the biggest search engine already dominating the Internet take control of the biggest Internet portal. The best solution is to leave Yahoo! alone and keep a third competitor.
NASA confirms there’s no Planet X or precursors of terrestrial calamity
Posted by: | CommentsThanks to Chris once again for pointing this out. There’s an interesting post on NASA’s website Ask an Astrobiologist and here it is:
Question:
I have something that may sound ridiculous to write to you but I need to ask you. My friends and I were talking today and they told me that on May 15th, there will be a comet passing the earth, not hitting it, but its gravitational pull will stop the earth from spinning cause all these things to happen and the earth will flood and there will be earthquakes and stuff. This may sound ridiculous but it would be appreciated to get a response back.
Answer:
Don’t worry, these rumors of catastrophe are not true. For months, weird stories have circulated on the Internet predicting the close passage by Earth this month of a Planet X sometimes called Niburu, or in some versions it is a giant comet or asteroid. The simple answer is that these are pure fiction. There is no such object. Also, there have been no unusual levels of earthquakes or solar flares or any other of the supposed precursors of terrestrial calamity. Contrary to what you see on some of these websites, nothing unusual is happening and scientists are not worried by such supposed events. Even more to the point, it is already evident that there is no large comet or looming planet bearing down on the Earth. If you want details on these stories about Nibiru or Planet X, check out the following website http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/misc/planetx/index.html.
David Morrison
NAI Senior Scientist
It pretty much says it all and it’s nice to hear it from a Senior Scientist at NASA. You’ll tell me of course NASA wouldn’t say a huge calamity is at our doors as it’s a government agency. But I can tell it’s just one more confirmation that there won’t be something such as the end of the world in the next couple of years or in 2012. If you’re a first time visitor of Daily Common Sense I encourage you to read on the subject:
2012 Explained - Why it shouldn’t be feared
What is that pole shift thing?
Planet X Explained - Why it doesn’t matter that much
What is that pole shift thing? - Part II
Posted by: | Comments
One of my previous article, “What is that pole shift thing?”, got a lot of attention and it explained what a magnetic pole reversal was. Why a part II if it’s been covered before? Well, there’s a lot of misunderstanding about what a pole shift really is. There’s two important concepts about pole shift: Magnetic reversal and change in the axis of rotation of the Earth. Magnetic reversal being covered, I will explain the possible change in the Earth’s rotational axis. We’ll start with Wikipedia’s definition of a pole shift:
The pole shift theory is a hypothesis that the axis of rotation of a planet has not always been at its present-day locations or that the axis will not persist there; in other words, that its physical poles had been or will be shifted. Pole shift theory is almost always discussed in the context of Earth, but other solar system bodies may have experienced axial reorientation during their existences.
How can the poles physically change location?
To really understand the way poles can physically change location, let’s take a look at the Earth’s different layers:
As you see on this picture, our planet has mainly 3 layers: Crust, mantle and core. The core is then actually divided in two: Solid inner core and liquid outer core. The crust is the layer we live on and it’s very thin compared to other layers. If the earth was an apple, the skin would be the crust, so you can see it’s really thin compared to the rest. This crust is divided into plates called tectonic plates and they sort of float on the mantle just below. These plates usually move along smoothly but sometimes they stick and build up pressure. When there’s too much pressure, the rock bends and we get an Earthquake. So now we all understand that the crust “float” on the mantle (The mantle flows so that’s why the crust can actually “float” on it).
We’re now getting to the real deal. The reason why the poles would shift is because of mass distribution. Mass distribution explains why the Earth rotate the way it does and I like to explain it with laundry: When you put clothes in your washing machine, you try to distribute them equally with the space you have. If you put everything on one side, when the washing machine starts it will make an awful noise and probably start shaking and moving around. You have to stop it, balance what’s in it correctly and start over. The Earth act the same way and it rotate smoothly because it’s well balanced. Of course it’s a little more complicated than that but for our needs we don’t need more. If an extra weight unbalance the Earth, it would tilt and rotate itself until the extra weight moves somewhere near the equator. The poles(physical poles as in top and bottom of Earth) would still be pointing the same direction, but the continents would be shifted completely due to the moving crust. That’s why knowing about the crust is important: Because it “float” on the surface, it can move freely and such a radical change in the Earth’s rotational axis would cause it to move a lot. Such a drastic change would cause the crust to slip and you very well imagine the disasters it can cause. This theory is called “True Polar Wander”.
Why and how would this happen?
There’s evidence it happened in the past and this theory could explain a lot of things that remained mysterious. There’s a couple of theories about how it could happen next:
- Important mass building at the poles
- Continents drift
- An asteroid hitting Earth
- A large object/Planet not from the Solar system approaching Earth
- Something like a super sized volcano formed far from the equator
So as you can see once again, it’s all about a critical mass building up far from the equator. But Adam Maloof, professor in Geosciences at Princeton University has something really interesting to say:
If a true polar wander event has occurred in our planet’s history, it’s likely been when the continents formed a single mass on one side of the Earth. We don’t expect there to be another event in the foreseeable future, though. The Earth’s surface is pretty well balanced today.
So, as you can see, it’s not like the magnetic reversal which is mostly unpredictable and can happen anytime (Even though as I explained it’s not that much of a big deal). It’s a process that we can see happening. The only drastic way it could happen is with an asteroid striking Earth or a large object/planet getting near Earth. For the asteroid, NASA is monitoring near Earth objects and I’m sure they do a good job with that. For the planet approaching it’s clear people are making reference to Planet X/Nibiru. Once again, if you haven’t read my article Planet X - Why it doesn’t matter that much I encourage you to do so. This will give you some information on why it’s not really a possibility.
As I said in Part I, It happened in the past and it will happen again, we just don’t know when. I decided not to give to much historic informations on the pole shift theory as I know you can all find that fairly easily on Wikipedia and other places. In fact here’s a link to Pole Shift theories on Wikipedia. I don’t like repeating other’s website content and my goal was really to point out how the crust could move around the globe and expose the fact that it’s a mass distribution problem that cause the pole shift.
It’s a credible theory and I won’t try to kill it. In fact, Albert Einstein thought it was a credible theory. But that doesn’t mean we have to fear this! There’s no evidence pointing for that to happen any time soon. Like any other doomsday prophecy there’s a fear propaganda built around it and don’t get caught in that.
What’s the relation between this Pole Shift and 2012?
There’s no clear link between 2012 and that physical pole shift. It’s most likely linked with Planet X approaching Earth and then causing a pole shift due to the change in gravity which holds our Solar system the way it is. There’s also a possibility for an asteroid to hit Earth. TU24 just missed Earth a couple of days ago and I remember that I read about 2012 and TU24 hitting Earth. Anyway, there’s probably not much to fear about 2012.
Conclusion - Will a Pole shift put an end to our world anytime soon?
A pole shift probably won’t happen anytime soon as nothing is pointing toward that direction, but it will happen someday. I think it’s a really interesting and credible scientific possibility. I just don’t buy the option it will happen anytime soon. It’s something we can track and as Maloof said, the Earth’s surface is pretty well balanced at the moment. Of course something unpredictable can happen but we can say that everyday in life. Every time I drive my car there’s a possibility for me to die but I just don’t think about it maybe like 95% of the population. Well , there’s a slight possibility for a pole shift and a magnetic reversal everyday but life goes on.
Microsoft and Yahoo potential deal
Posted by: | Comments
Microsoft has just made an offer to buy Yahoo in a effort to intensify its presence on the internet already dominated by Google. It’s kind of funny that such an offer is made a couple of days after I wrote my article Why Google succeed where Microsoft fails.
Microsoft is offering $31 a share for the internet company, in a cash and share combination for investors. This is valuing Yahoo at $44.6bn and is offering a 62% premium compared to Yahoo’s share last night’s closing price of $19.18.
There’s still possibilities of the deal not taking place as it’s only a proposal and it’s not the first time Microsoft and Yahoo talk about such a transaction. But now it seems to be made a bit more seriously than usual. I guess we’ll see in a couple of days where this proposal leads.
It’s definitely in the best interest of Microsoft to acquire Yahoo because they really struggle to beat Google. Yahoo is also falling behind Google in term of search engine but they offer a great alternative to Google in term of News/entertainment/Search/Finance/etc. We have to remember that according to Alexa, Yahoo is still the number 1 in terms of traffic and that’s an interesting thing for Microsoft who is in position 4 and 5 with msn.com and live.com. That would increase their presence significantly.
I personally don’t see it has a good news if it was to happen simply for the good reason that Yahoo was a really good alternative compared to Google and Microsoft. They had a different perspective about the web than Microsoft and Google and that wasn’t bad. If it happen it will come down to a Google vs Microsoft war and I don’t like it. It’s nothing personal with Microsoft or anything but I felt pretty good with having three option: Live, Yahoo and Google.
Anyway, we’ll see where the deal goes I guess!

A new energy drink called Blow is now on the market. The name Blow is actually the street name for cocaine and the marketing package contains a vial full of powder, a credit card and a mirror. Just like if you were buying cocaine off the street, but instead you have to dilute it in water.
