I posted a little something a couple of days (weeks?) ago about the 2012 Olympics and how its being used to spread the 2012 doomsday theory. Now, a new theory has surfaced about the Olympics’ mascots and it is once again totally ridiculous. The theory tries to link China’s earthquake disaster and other recent catastrophes with the Olympics mascots. smh.com.au published an article about it and here’s the theory:

The five Olympic mascots are Jingjing, Huanhuan, Yingying, Nini and Beibei. Jingjing, a panda, is the animal most closely associated with Sichuan province where the earthquake struck.

Huanhuan, a cartoon character with flame-red hair, is being linked by bloggers to the Olympic torch that has been dogged by anti-China protests on its round-the-world tour.

Yingying, an antelope, is an animal confined to the borders of Tibet, which has been the scene of riots and the cause of international protests against China, the bloggers say.

Nini, represented by a kite, is being viewed as a reference to the “kite city” of Weifang, in Shandong, where there was a deadly train crash last month.

That leaves only Beibei, represented by a sturgeon fish, which online doomsayers suggest could indicate a looming disaster in the Yangtze River, the only place where sturgeon is found.

Today, Daily Common Sense reached the 100,000 visits mark. I just want to thank every DCS reader for making this blog what it is and also a big thanks to a couple of readers that are commenting on this blog since the beginning! ;)

This is taken from a post on a certain forum (I want to preserve anonymity):

The Sun has no atmosphere such as Earth, science says the Moon orbits because of the balance between inertia and gravity, constantly falling but never falling, understanding this, the Earth would crash into the Sun because the Sun has no atmosphere, the massive gravitaional pull of the Sun would have already crashed the Earth in it.

The Sun and the Moon are the same size, this why an eclipes looks perfect! If they were different sizes one would attract the other due to gravitational pull and collide, but if they are equal, they counter each others pull.

If the Earth did spin, WE would all be dizzy by now?

According to you’re science the sun and stars are the same, therefore they don’t move, Earth moves around the sun, hence, where ever the planet is around the sun, we should not be able to constantly see the constellations, there would be a point were the Earth would be on the other half of the sun and Earth would only be able to see the constellations coming around the bend. But that’s not the case is it!

If only for that single post, school is important. Oh, and the Earth is flat by the way! Why does everything has to be a damn conspiracy? The Earth revolves around the Sun, end of the story. Then what, other planets from our “solar” system also revolves around Earth I guess? Oh, and if the gravitational pull of Sun is too big meaning we would crash into it, do you really think the gravitational pull of Earth would be strong enough to keep the Sun revolving around us? That would mean comparing the Sun with the Moon in a certain way…In fact, that’s what the guy says: the Sun and the Moon are the same size!

Anyway, I don’t even know why I’m arguing.

A DCS reader pointed out this website in one of my article about 2012. While I don’t believe much of what’s written in the article, the author is looking at the 2012 date in a way we’re not used to see with doomsdayers. You can have a look but I think the core of the article can be explained by these couple of lines:

WILL WE SURVIVE?

Yes, we will. A human is not and has never been his body. He is his mind, with all its virtues, lusts, evils and defects as I described in my article about Quetzalcoatl.

WHO WILL SAVE US?

The Hindu Triad or Holy Trinity is Brahma, Shiva (The Destroyer), and Vishnu (The Preserver). Shiva and Vishnu are also part of the Unbegotten Brahma. In reality, Shiva and Vishnu are also the same Deity, for Vish is just a reversal of “Shiv.”

Shiva will protect us again, as he has always done in past Maha Yugas. He will swallow the poison of our evils, turning his throat blue. From then on, throughout all the other successive Kali Yugas, Brahm, through his Shiva and Vishnu aspect, will send out sons in the flesh who will die on their crosses to reassure us that we will always be redeemable.

I’m pretty sure you get the picture. While I don’t think it makes much sense, at least it’s not one of those “everybody is going to die” theory.

I found an article I think you will enjoy about evolution’s misconceptions.

iological evolution is descent with modification. This definition encompasses small-scale evolution (changes in gene frequency in a population from one generation to the next) and large-scale evolution (the descent of different species from a common ancestor over many generations). Evolution helps us to understand the history of life. While evolution is very widely accepted, many people hold to misconceptions about it. This list should help to dispel some of those myths.

You can read the complete article with the top 15 list here.

This is just one of the funniest video I’ve seen lately: training video for Asian prostitues. Enjoy!

I stumbled upon an article from howstuffworks.com and it is definitely interesting/funny. The article is called “How aliens work” and can be found here: http://science.howstuffworks.com/alien-physiology.htm

That’s it, nothing more, just a quick post ;)

Well, you can find out by having a look at the ranking of your country in the Global Peace Index. What is the global piece index? Well, as the site describe it, it is a ground-breaking milestone in the study of peace. It is an index that ranks the nations of the world by their peacefulness and identifies some of the drivers of that peace. In case you don’t want to read further and you are only interested in the ranking of the United States, they are ranked 97 out of 140.

I had a look at the expert panel and I must say it looks like a pretty diversified panel and this way the index can be seen as something reliable. You know, it’s not twelve experts from the United States or Australia who would rank their country first even if not the case. Also, you might wonder what are the indicators of peace, well here they are:

The Global Peace Index is intended as a review of the state of peace in nations over the past year, although many indicators are based on available data from the last two years. The advisory panel decided against including data reflecting a country’s longer-term historical experience of domestic and international conflict on the grounds that the GPI uses authoritative statistics on ongoing civil and trans-national wars collated by institutes such as the Uppsala Conflict Data Program and the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo. These, combined with two indicators scored by the Economist Intelligence Unit’s analysts, comprise five of the 24 indicators.

  • Number of external and internal conflicts fought: 2001-06
  • Estimated number of deaths from organised conflict (external)
  • Number of deaths from organised conflict (internal)
  • Level of organised conflict (internal)
  • Relations with neighbouring countries

Measures of societal safety and security

Ten of the indicators assess the levels of safety and security in a society (country), ranging from the level of distrust in other citizens, to the level of respect for human rights and the rate of homicides and violent crimes. Crime data is from the UN Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC). Five of these indicators have been scored by the Economist Intelligence Unit’s team of country analysts.

  • Level of distrust in other citizens
  • Number of displaced people as a percentage of the population
  • Political instability
  • Level of disrespect for human rights (Political Terror Scale)
  • Potential for terrorist acts
  • Number of homicides per 100,000 people
  • Level of violent crime
  • Likelihood of violent demonstrations
  • Number of jailed population per 100,000 people
  • Number of internal security officers and police per 100,000 people

Measures of militarization

Nine of the indicators are related to a country’s military build-up - reflecting the assertion that the level of militarization and access to weapons is directly linked to how at peace a country feels internationally. Comparable data are readily available from sources such as the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS).

  • Military expenditure as a percentage of GDP
  • Number of armed services personnel per 100,000 people
  • Volume of transfers (imports) of major conventional weapons per 100,000 people
  • Volume of transfers (exports) of major conventional weapons per 100,000 people
  • UN Deployments 2007-08 (percentage of total armed forces)
  • Non-UN Deployments 2007-08 (percentage of total armed forces)
  • Aggregate number of heavy weapons per 100,000 people
  • Ease of access to small arms and light weapons
  • Military capability/sophistication

I advise you have a look at the website if you want to learn more, it is quite interesting.

Wow, now it’s time to wake up. In this article from The Telegraph, we learn that Prince Charles said a £15 billion annual programme was required to halt deforestation or the world would have to live with the dire consequences. He also said the following:

We will end up seeing more drought and starvation on a grand scale. Weather patterns will become even more terrifying and there will be less and less rainfall.

We are asking for something pretty dreadful unless we really understand the issues now and [the] urgency of them.

Ok, this is something we are all aware of. Why wake up 18 months before?

Here are some other interesting quotes in the article:

He said that every year, 20 million hectares of forest – equivalent to the area of England, Wales and Scotland – were destroyed and called for a “gigantic partnership” of governments, businesses and consumers to slow it down.

“What we have got to do is try to ensure that these forests are more valuable alive than dead. At the moment, there is more value in them being dead,” he said.

He estimated that the cost would be about £15 billion a year but said that this should be viewed as an insurance policy for the whole world. “That is roughly just under one per cent of all the insurance premiums paid in the world in any one year. It is an insurance premium to ensure the world has some rainfall and reasonable weather patterns. It is a good deal.”

This is no news to me and I’m sure this no news to you either. We are all aware of the climate changes and that we must act quickly! Why this sudden rush from the Prince Charles? I guess this has a lot more impact when you say 18 months than when you say it’s 5-10 years away like we’ve been saying for the past decade. At least someone in the political sphere is spreading the word…One question we may ask is: even if he’s “Prince Charles”, does he really have influence on important political decisions? I don’t think so unfortunately. But anyway, that’s a step forward, he certainly has more influence than you and me!

Just when I thought I had seen everything about aliens, 2012, numerology and all that stuff, I found this article called London Olympics 2012 : Zion (The New Jerusalem)

I mean, have a look if you are interested in linking 2012, the Mayan calendar, aliens and 11:11 numerology all together. It is an interesting read but definitely failed to convince me. In fact, if you read the article, they lost me when starting to link the whole thing with numerology and particularly 11:11.

The last time I posted a video about 9/11 conspiracy theory, it brought a lot of controversy among DCS readers and I must admit I liked it. So I’m going with one more well made 9/11 video. This is a 20 minutes video supporting the 9/11 conspiracy theory and I’m not commenting on it, you make your own opinion on that one. I just enjoy getting your opinions on this interesting subject and 9/11 always bring interesting conversations.

So here’s the video:

I recently experimented with the developer framework offered by Facebook to create Facebook applications. That simply means I experimented and tried to create simple Facebook applications just for fun, nothing that would actually go public. I must say I’m extremely disappointed by the framework offered by Facebook as it’s a total piece of junk if you compare to what Google offers for iGoogle/OpenSocial for example. Anyway, that’s not the point of the article, I know there’s a lot of people that are actually thinking right now: “What the hell is he talking about?”. Let’s get to the real deal, your privacy.

You have to understand that everytime you add a new Facebook application to your profile, this application is not running on Facebook’s servers, it is running on a third party server. One could be running from Daily Common Sense for example. This means that Facebook has absolutely no control over what you do as a third party with the information you collect. Every Facebook application has access to your profile’s information and all your friends’ information. Of course, when you sign up as a developper, you agree to the terms of service that states you are only allowed to store the “profile id” of a person and nothing more. Ok, that’s fair, I mean there’s nothing I can do with your profile id. The only problem is that as a developper, if you install my application, I have access to a lot more than your profile id! I can store whatever information I want from you in my own personal database without you or Facebook noticing. Oh sure, I’m violating the terms of service…So what? Nobody knows I’m doing it!

While the information on your profile is not enough to steal your identity, it is quite easy to sell that information and god knows what happen next. I tried with my personal profile and I was able to get quite a lot of information…And store it.

I don’t want everyone to stop using Facebook, I just want you to be careful with the information you put available on there. Remember that I may be an honest developer and you can be sure that if I someday release a Facebook application I won’t be storing personal informations, but can you assume every developer is honest?

What’s sad is that big companies will buy the technology for millions and you’ll never hear of it again.

An interesting article surfaced today on cnn.com regarding scientists in the UK looking for 150 women willing to eat chocolate for a year as part of a study. Don’t worry, it’s not a “Supersize me II”, the women aren’t expected to eat only chocolate for a year; it will be introduced into their diet.

The goal of the trial at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, eastern England is to test whether a natural compound found in cocoa could cut the risk of heart disease among women with diabetes.

The chocolate used in the study is a special type of chocolate :

A Belgian confectionist has created the special chocolate bar containing high levels of flavonoids — a plant compound that has been shown to reduce heart risk factors — to be used in the experiment. Soy, another natural source of flavonoids, has also been added to the bar.

And the hypothesis behind that study is:

“The hypothesis of this exciting study is that flavonoids may improve the level of protection against heart disease over and above that provided by conventional drugs,” said Dr. Ketan Dhatariya, a consultant in diabetes at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

I guess there are a lot of worst studies to be part of. Actually, eating chocolate for a whole year with the only goal of helping science is kind of interresting…

UK readers, jump on that one! ;)

The famous Tesla Shield. Still wondering if it’s a scam? I mean, how could I prove it doesn’t work? I’ve talked a lot about it, said it was a scam and today is time to prove it. Thanks to a DCS reader for pointing this out to me: you can actually find a little something on Amazon that looks so much like a Tesla purple shield. Oh wait, it’s a Tesla purple shield.

First let’s have a look at what Life Technology says about their device:

The Tesla Shield™ has two active elements which act in synergy with one another. These are the bioactive outer shell which was invented and developed by Nikola Tesla and his assistant Ralph Bergstresser, and the bioactive internal module which was developed by Life Technology™.

The specialist bioactive outer shell of The Tesla Shield™ was developed by Nikola Tesla and Ralph Bergstresser. The bioactive outer shell of The Tesla Shield™ is created by the Tesla/Bergstresser process and allows the device to resonate with the cosmic energy particles known as tachyons. The Tesla Shield™ emits a positive tachyon field with a radius of approximately 10 meters which is capable of penetrating any material substance or living organism.

Ok, so we are talking about the outer shell of the Tesla Shield here. So let’s have a look at a picture of this outer shell:

Now, let’s have a look at an Aluminum Anodized CONTAINER DOG ID HOLDER you can easily find on amazon.com at a terrible price of 9.99$ for a pack of 6:

Oh…How similar is that? Let’s read again:

The specialist bioactive outer shell of The Tesla Shield™ was developed by Nikola Tesla and Ralph Bergstresser. The bioactive outer shell of The Tesla Shield™ is created by the Tesla/Bergstresser process and allows the device to resonate with the cosmic energy particles known as tachyons. The Tesla Shield™ emits a positive tachyon field with a radius of approximately 10 meters which is capable of penetrating any material substance or living organism.

I think it solves it all, you can’t say this device ain’t a scam when you know it’s a dog id holder. How would you feel to wear a dog id holder? I would feel like I’m being ripped off. Oh, yeah there’s also the fact that they sell this crap for 199.99$ when it actually cost 9.99$ for a pack of 6.

What about the inner component? God, they sell you a dog id holder saying it was developed by Nicolas Tesla, can you really trust what’s inside?

I hope people Google a little before buying, this way they can find this article and don’t buy a 199.99$ product that’s actually worth 2$.
