Are we being a little paranoid here?

As we tell all our NukAlert customers, we hope/pray our rad protection products will not be needed anytime soon, but like medical insurance or smoke alarms, if/when needed, you’d be glad then you had it. With the growing threat of nuclear terrorism, or another Chernobyl, most NukAlert users worldwide will be served by it then re-assuring them that where they are is OK, or if not, it will confirm when they’d gotten to a safer location. Somehow I doubt all those people really use it. Also, Shane, medical insurance and smoke alarms are insurances against things that actually have any chance of happening. At any given time there are any number of disasters possible, but the chances they’ll happen are so bad it’s not worth it. Would you spend hundreds of thousands of dollars crash-proofing your house in case an airplane crashed into it? Do you carry a thermometer on you at all times in case of spontaneous combustion? Another Chernobyl is unlikely (see below), and also in many places they don’t use nuclear power so the fear is misplaced. No country wants to use nukes on anyone else for fear of being nuked, and nuclear terrorism is just not happening. Even if they could and wanted to, they wouldn’t need to. If the point of terrorism is to raise fear and lower morale, they don’t need to use a nuke. The events of September 11th, 2001, show what I mean exactly.

Also, I take a bit of offense about the Chernobyl thing. First of all, trying to profit off the fear of an event like Chernobyl is just low. Secondly, the two main theories of how the Chernobyl event was caused involve poor design and poorly-trained workers. This is probably not happening again.

Tom, I hope/pray you are right about the threat not being significant as I’ve got kids, too, and would be thrilled to have our products gather much dust for many, many years un-needed.

Unfortunately, I do business with FEMA and DHS and DoD and attend govt conferences and seminars about the issue and according to them all we are both at ever increasing risk and largely unprepared to effectively respond to it. (The NRC, for instance, admits that, on the average, every other day a licensed and controlled radiation source is lost, stolen, misplaced or disposed of illegally.)

Regarding your allegation that we are fear mongering for profit, you don’t know how I came first to see the threat decades ago, then strived to develop and offer solutions and information and products to address them, not the other way around.

Regarding Chernobyl, true, nuke plants today are of a safer design, and I’ve always been a fan of nuclear power, but today we also have the real threat of terrorism against nuke plants we did not have 20 years ago. I’ve been to and consulted at nuclear plants, our national labs, and our nuke bomb making facilities and along with my military and law enforcement background I’ve never been impressed with the security I’ve seen there.

BTW, More important than any product we sell is the free information we offer and the push we’ve been making to these agency heads, and even visits with Senators and Congressmen in their DC offices, to re-institute civil defense training of the public as seen in our article ‘The Good News About Nuclear Destruction’ at…

For lack of simple & basic nuclear, 5th grade level, civil defense education millions of Americans are at risk of perishing needlessly if/when anything nuclear, heaven forbid, does get unleashed. That is a risk, however small, that is just too cheap and easy not to rectify, IMO. - Shane
