The thermohaline current which traverses the worlds oceans has slowed down in the past because of an increased amount of freshwater pouring into the Arctic. The freshwater run off can slow the current down because the current only works if there is enough heavy, salty water to sink and drive the conveyor, which in turn carries heat from the tropics into the temperate regions. The UK is only as warm as it is because we are on the edge of the current. If it stops, things will get cold. It has slowed down in the past, quite recently, when a Greenland glacier melted which was the barrier between a huge lake and the Sea (I am a bit sketchy on the actual dates and places but Google 'mini Ice Age' should bring up something, it is a well known and recorded event). The result was a drop in the salinity of the sea and thus the water wasn't heavy enough to sink and drive the thermohaline current. The thermohaline current is one of the major reasons that the planet is as warm as it is. It carries heat from the equator to the poles.</p> <p>So, there is a very real possibility that the world could tip into an ice age as a result of global warming. Predicting when an ice age will next happen is not possible, however. Saying that an ice age is going to happen in any year is total fantasy. Predicting natural events is very difficult. Governments pour millions into scientific research which aims to predict earthquakes and volcanoes and they are still a long way off from doing that.
