Archive for 2012

I recorded this video 2 days ago and posted it on 2012 Explained, but why not make a quick post about it? I recorded this because I still get a lot of emails regarding 2012 and this is the most complete answer I can give without going into too much details. I mean, there’s a new theory everyday regarding 2012 and there’s no way I can study each of them and I don’t want to anyway. I feel the subject has been covered here at Daily Common Sense with my articles, but also with the comments and the forum.

The most complete and straight forward answer I can give to “Is 2012 true?” and “Are we gonna die?” is the following: “It’s a business”. People are building businesses around 2012 with a complete business model and the goal is to generate money by spreading fear. It does work pretty well. Anyway, I won’t go into details here as it is what I’m talking about in the video. Enjoy and let me know what you think.

I’m proud to announce that Daily Common Sense now has its own forum! I added a link in the navigation bar for the forum section, but you can reach it at the following address: Daily Common Sense Forum.

I must admit I mainly created the forum because of 2012 Explained, which at the time of writing has 735 comments! It really is a pain to load the article now because of all the comments in there and I’m slowly moving things to a forum instead. I’m not closing the comments yet but there will surely be a time where it won’t be possible to post a comment in that specific article. I receive thousands of first time visitors to that single article every week and I think it’s a pain for a first time visitor to load that page. A total turn off.

So there you go, continue to comment in here I really appreciate it, but the forum is a good way to exchange with others and also to reach me! ;)

Enjoy!

Alex, a loyal DCS reader, made a video about 2012 and this video is partially based on my 2012/pole shift articles. I just want to post the video in here so you guys can have a look. It actually got some attention on youtube with 100+ comments and 2,577 views…Not bad at all. So here it is and a big thanks to Alex for spreading the facts about 2012:

I said it numerous times and I wrote plenty of articles stating 2012 is a complete scam. A DCS reader posted a link to NASA’s “Ask an Astrobiologist” website and it deserves some attention. Here is the question/answer:

Question

Hi, i have a question about the sun alignment in the center of the galaxy in 2012. Will the sun be in the EXACT center of the galaxy? or just lined up/next to the center of the sun. If you can, can you explain this to me. (15 years old) Thank you very much.

Answer

I can’t explain it because it is just an Internet hoax. There is no alignment with the center of the Galaxy in 2012 or any time. As to the Sun being in the center of the Galaxy, that it impossible; the Sun and solar system will always remain at about 30,000 light years from the galactic center. These stories on the Internet are simply lies, and I am sorry if they have been a problem for you. A lot of the stuff on the Internet is wrong, and you have to learn to distinguish the truth from the lies. One simple test is to ask if any of these claims are made by real scientists, or if they have been reported in newspapers or on TV news. The stories about alignments or disaster striking in 2012 do not pass this test.

Hope this clears a couple of things. I know some people will say you can’t trust the NASA, blah, blah, blah and I don’t care that much honestly. One thing I’ve learned from that 2012 thing is that you can’t argue in a logical way and there will always be people to scare the shit out of you no matter how logical your argumentation is. There will always be people to tell you to “open your eyes”, get out of your “perfect world”, “conspiracies are all around you”, etc. With over 600 comments on my 2012 article, I’ve seen the discussion going into many directions and I can say this thing will go on until 2012 because new scams will surface every day. And guess what? In 2012 we’ll be talking about 2016, then 2020 and so on.

I posted a little something a couple of days (weeks?) ago about the 2012 Olympics and how its being used to spread the 2012 doomsday theory. Now, a new theory has surfaced about the Olympics’ mascots and it is once again totally ridiculous. The theory tries to link China’s earthquake disaster and other recent catastrophes with the Olympics mascots. smh.com.au published an article about it and here’s the theory:

The five Olympic mascots are Jingjing, Huanhuan, Yingying, Nini and Beibei. Jingjing, a panda, is the animal most closely associated with Sichuan province where the earthquake struck.

Huanhuan, a cartoon character with flame-red hair, is being linked by bloggers to the Olympic torch that has been dogged by anti-China protests on its round-the-world tour.

Yingying, an antelope, is an animal confined to the borders of Tibet, which has been the scene of riots and the cause of international protests against China, the bloggers say.

Nini, represented by a kite, is being viewed as a reference to the “kite city” of Weifang, in Shandong, where there was a deadly train crash last month.

That leaves only Beibei, represented by a sturgeon fish, which online doomsayers suggest could indicate a looming disaster in the Yangtze River, the only place where sturgeon is found.

Read the full article at smh if you want a little more!

A DCS reader pointed out this website in one of my article about 2012. While I don’t believe much of what’s written in the article, the author is looking at the 2012 date in a way we’re not used to see with doomsdayers. You can have a look but I think the core of the article can be explained by these couple of lines:

WILL WE SURVIVE?

Yes, we will. A human is not and has never been his body. He is his mind, with all its virtues, lusts, evils and defects as I described in my article about Quetzalcoatl.

WHO WILL SAVE US?

The Hindu Triad or Holy Trinity is Brahma, Shiva (The Destroyer), and Vishnu (The Preserver). Shiva and Vishnu are also part of the Unbegotten Brahma. In reality, Shiva and Vishnu are also the same Deity, for Vish is just a reversal of “Shiv.”

Shiva will protect us again, as he has always done in past Maha Yugas. He will swallow the poison of our evils, turning his throat blue. From then on, throughout all the other successive Kali Yugas, Brahm, through his Shiva and Vishnu aspect, will send out sons in the flesh who will die on their crosses to reassure us that we will always be redeemable.

I’m pretty sure you get the picture. While I don’t think it makes much sense, at least it’s not one of those “everybody is going to die” theory.

Just when I thought I had seen everything about aliens, 2012, numerology and all that stuff, I found this article called London Olympics 2012 : Zion (The New Jerusalem)

I mean, have a look if you are interested in linking 2012, the Mayan calendar, aliens and 11:11 numerology all together. It is an interesting read but definitely failed to convince me. In fact, if you read the article, they lost me when starting to link the whole thing with numerology and particularly 11:11.

I was doing my daily search for scams and hoaxes and came across a new website about 2012. Of course it has everything you expect from that kind of website and it’s web 0.1 as you’d expect. So nothing irregular there except it has a couple of theories I wasn’t necessarily aware about 2012. You know, it’s kind of hard to keep up with all the crap being spread around about 2012. In fact it’s not just something about 2012, but it’s a general thing called 11:11. Apparently, people all over the world are beginning to notice more and more of these 11:11 sightings. It can appear on your alarm clock, microwave and can also be apparently linked with a lot of the numbers involved in 9/11. I personally don’t feel concerned by that as I haven’t noticed anything like that lately. Anyway, just to a quick search of 11:11 on Google and you’re up for a lot of crap.

I would like to take an example from the website I was talking about previously to explain why these 11:11 things are just a bunch of crap. From the website:

Have you ever looked at the clock and saw the exact same time on a repetitive basis?

This may not be a coincidence. If you Google “11:11″ you’ll receive over 124 million results on this increasingly intriguing phenomena.

Interesting numerology trivia: if you do numerology on 12-21-2012, you get the following:
12+21+2012=2045

2+0+4+5=11

coincidence or not?

God, god, god. Can we please stop using that kind or arguments? I mean, we can figure out other dates that would add up to 11 like this. Why not 13-21-2011 or 12-25-2008? Oh yeah sorry, I know, it has to be related to 2012.

Anyway, I’m just sick of that numerology stuff and remember, it is not a valid argument!

A DCS reader made a comment on one of my article today and this comment mentioned that going towards 2012, we’ll eventually reach a point where “time will stop” and this process has already began. Apparently, we now have 16 hours days instead of 24h. I’ve looked around to figure out where that claim was coming from and there’s a quote that is spread all over the web about this. Here it is:

The resonance of Earth (Schumann Resonance) has been 7.8Hz for thousands of years.ans Since 1980 it has risen to over 12Hz. This means that 16 hours now equate to a 24 hour day. Time is speeding up!

First of all, this quote is all over the internet without any kind of scientific explanation. You can search for this and you will literally find 100’s of websites saying the exact same thing with the quote copy pasted, which basically mean nobody has a single clue about what this mean. This affirmation is aimed at people with no scientific knowledge and here’s why: There’s a small scientific affirmation at the beginning about the Schumann Resonance that look quite serious because let’s admit it, not many people know what Schumman Resonance is. Then, there’s absolutely no explanation why the Schumman Resonance can be linked to time and boom, conclusion about time speeding up. I’m sorry but that kind of argument doesn’t make sense and can’t be trusted. What’s the link between 7.8Hz to 12Hz and 24h to 16h? I’d like a proper explanation.

What is that Schumann Resonance?

According to Wikipedia:

This global electromagnetic resonance phenomenon is named after physicist Winfried Otto Schumann who predicted it mathematically in 1952. Schumann resonance occurs because the space between the surface of the Earth and the conductive ionosphere acts as a waveguide. The limited dimensions of the Earth cause this waveguide to act as a resonant cavity for electromagnetic waves in the ELF band. The cavity is naturally excited by energy from lightning strikes. Schumann resonance modes are observed in the power spectra of the natural electromagnetic background noise, as separate peaks at extremely low frequencies (ELF) around 7.8, 14.3, 20.8, 27.3 and 33.8 Hz.

The fundamental mode of the Schumann resonance is a standing wave in the Earth-ionosphere cavity with a wavelength equal to the circumference of the Earth. This lowest-frequency (and highest-intensity) mode of the Schumann resonance occurs at a frequency of approximately 7.8 Hz. Further resonance modes appear at approximately 6.5 Hz intervals, a characteristic attributed to the atmosphere’s spherical geometry. The peaks exhibit a spectral width of approximately 20% on account of the damping of the respective modes in the dissipative cavity. The eighth overtone lies at approximately 59.9 Hz.

Schumann resonances are used to track global lightning activity. Owing to the connection between lightning activity and the Earth’s climate they can also be used to monitor global temperature variations and variations of upper water vapor. Extraterrestrial lightning may also be detected and studied with Schumann resonances. Schumann resonances have been used for research and monitoring of the lower ionosphere on Earth and was suggested for exploration of lower ionosphere parameters on celestial bodies. Schumann resonances can be used to track geomagnetic and ionospheric disturbances. More recently, Schumann resonances have been used for monitoring transient luminous events – sprites, elves, jets, and other upper-atmospheric lightning. A new field of interest using Schumann resonances is related to short-term earthquake prediction. Schumann resonances have gone beyond the boundaries of physics, invading medicine, raising interest in artists and musicians, and gaining interest from fringe fields such as psychobiology.

So, how can we link this to time?

Unfortunately, I haven’t found any scientific evidence to link the Schumann Resonance to time. I also came across an interesting article that you can find at this address: http://www.oulu.fi/~spaceweb/textbook/schumann.html

The website shows a graph of the Shumann Resonance and how humans can influence it. On the graph, there’s a peak at 17Hz that is due to Swedish railroads. So basically, there’s a way of influencing the measures and because there’s Swedish railroads in the area, does it mean time goes faster there?

Anyway, you can think about the whole thing, but that time accelerating argument is just nonsense. Being physically possible or not, just the way its brought is a problem. You can’t back your argument by scientific facts without explaining how it is influencing your conclusion.

I was thinking about 2012 and all the doomsday prophecies linked to it tonight and I started to make a recap of all the events that are supposed to happen. It’s when you do that recap that you understand properly nobody know what they’re talking about. Here’s the list of 2012 events:

  • Pole shift
  • Magnetic pole reversal
  • Planet X getting near Earth or hitting Earth
  • Meteor hitting Earth (Thanks Nostradamus)
  • Planetary alignment leading to a major gravity burst with Earth being swallowed by the center of the galaxy.
  • New dimensions opening

So basically, in 2012, the Earth’s axis of rotation will be modified, the north and the south pole will swap, Planet X will hit Earth as well as a meteor, the Earth will be swallowed by the center of our galaxy and new dimensions will open giving new possibilities to humans.

That is assuming all the events are happening at the same time of course. But you know, when there’s just so many possibilities, to me it just sound nobody know what they’re talking about. It’s the same as saying: “Something will happen in 2012″. Come on. All these events don’t even make sense when put together and can’t physically happen at the same time.

Make one single credible theory and I’ll start listening, but until then…

A DCS reader sent an email to Cornell University’s astronomy division about 2012 and pole shift and he did receive an interesting answer which I think should be published. So, here it is:

The crust will definitely slide in the year 2012. But it is also
sliding right now.

Before I explain, let me just say that nothing unusual is going to
happen in 2012. Or at least, nothing that has anything to do with
cosmic alignments or the end of the Mayan calendar. Take a look at our
answer about the Mayan
calendar:http://curious.astro.cornell.edu/question.php?number=686

Anyway, yes, the crust will slide and is sliding, but there will be no
sudden catastrophic movement, except for normal earthquakes. Heres
why…

It would be incredibly difficult to shift the Earth’s entire crust.
First of all, the crust is not a single solid layer like the candy
coating on an M&M, but is broken up into plates that are constantly
colliding and grinding into each other. Even if you could move one
plate, it wouldn’t mean that you would therefore move them all.
Instead you’d just create a new mountain range or ocean trench by
smashing the plates together or driving one under the other.

But it’s even more difficult than that: the Earth’s plates are not
floating on a sea of liquid rock, as many people believe. The crust is
solid rock, and so is the mantle. They act sort of like silly putty:
pull it slowly and it will stretch, but move too fast and it becomes
brittle and breaks. The plates of the crust move because the mantle is
slightly softer than the crust, so over geologic time (millions of
years) they can slide. There is nothing that could happen in the tiny
timespan of one year, such as 2012, that could shift the whole crust
independent of the mantle.

Plus, where would the force to do something like this come from?
Gravity is always there, and it doesn’t suddenly get stronger. Every
piece of matter in the universe is constantly pulling on every other
piece of matter. Tides are just a result of the gravity of the sun and
moon, and that’s not going to change. Meteor impacts happen way too
fast to move the crust as a whole, they just create a big explosion. I
can;t think of anything that could exert a slow, steady force on the
earth’s entire crust to make it shift the way that history channel
show was talking about.

So, bottom line is, don’t worry about 2012. It will be a year like any
other year. It will have its share of natural disasters, but nothing
out of the ordinary.

I hope this helps clear things up. Feel free to contact me if you have
any other questions!

This is a follow-up to my previous article about the web bot. In that article, I briefly explained what the web bots are and if they were able to predict anything. I strongly suggest you read the article but it’s not a prerequisite to this article. In that first web bot post, I made a slight mention of the “2012 prophecy” and guess what? Most of the comments are about the 2012 prophecy and whether or not the world will end in 2012. I won’t be talking about 2012 in this article but I will focus on the limits of the web bots because there’s a really important concept we all have to understand: Web bots scan man-made information. This article might look similar to my previous one, but is shorter and more focused on limits of web bots. It is a reminder of the core concept of web bots.

Web bots scan man-made information

This is the most important concept of web bots because it sets the limits to what the web bots are able to predict. This also explains why it’s impossible to predict any end of the world prophecy. Why is that? The main goal of a web bot is simply to crawl the web the same way Google would do it to extract important information from websites. That important information is usually the most relevant keywords on a website put with a certain algorithm that is able to get the meaning of the sentences the keywords are used in. This information is then put in a large database and the final goal is to compare similar topics to determine if they each point towards similar conclusions.

So, if we put all the pieces together: The web contains information written by humans, the web bots crawl that information, find correlations and make predictions. If the web bots take its information from man-made sources, then what can it predict? Only things humans can predict or have control over. Does that includes the end of the world? No. There’s nothing super-natural in web bots. It’s computer technology at its best: Gather, keep and interpret information the human brain can’t.

Sure someone can argue they sometimes predict the stocks market, but I know people who are damn good at this too. They can try to predict a whole lot of stuff, but it cannot go any further than what we can predict.

We have to be careful here, because web bots do have a power we don’t have: to merge all that information across the web and try to find a correlation. So, they can go a little further than what a single human can do, but they can’t go any further than what’s possible to predict by humans.

If it was really possible to predict incredible stuff, Google would have the answer to every question. Wait a minute…They do! Seriously, it’s possible to extract relevant information from the web but it has a limit. Google use the data it collect to do a lot of other stuff than giving you search results, but they wouldn’t be able to predict things humans don’t have control over if they tried. That’s the same thing for web bots, except it’s much more smaller than Google.

Put everything in perspective

Web bot is a really nice project but I think it’s going to be one more argument for doomsday prophets in the future. It already started with videos about the end of the world and web bots predicting it would happen in 2012. There are certain things we don’t have control over and we have to accept it. There are certain parts of our lives we don’t control and we have to accept it. Computers are useful but they’re not God. I think the web bot project has a nice future but always keep in mind the web is man made and the bots crawl the web: there’s a limit to their capacities, it’s no magic.

Some examples

What’s best than a couple of concrete examples?

Could the web bots predict:

  • Natural disaster: There’s not much chances, unless it’s a natural disaster we can predict. We sometimes know in advance of a tornado and are able to predict the disaster. In that case, a web bot could do the same by gathering information from websites talking about a possible disaster on a certain date.
  • End of the world: Unless it’s a very obvious situation or caused by humans’ actions, no.
  • Terrorist attacks: Yes. at least it can help.
  • Stocks markets: Yes it can help.
  • You get the idea.

Hope it’s clear

I hope it clears everything up so that it’s now obvious that it is impossible for a web bot to predict things humans have no control over.

Daily Common Sense TOP5

It’s been three months already and Daily Common Sense is in good shape. I have good readers, constant traffic to the blog and I think it’s time for a top 5 of my best articles. These are not the best ones according to me, but the best ones according to you. This means I’ve taken my articles with the most comments and reactions and made this list.

  1. 2012 Explained: Why it shouldn’t be feared
  2. What is that pole shift thing?
  3. MIT engineer Jeff King says 9/11 official theory is impossible
  4. Planet X Explained: Why it doesn’t matter that much
  5. 2012 Logo Campaign - Help fight 2012!

We can clearly get something out of this list. These are all informative posts related to the 2012 theory, except for the 9/11 story. It’s kind of normal because these are all linked between each other. My 2012 Logo campaign, even if released yesterday is already showing a solid 16 comments and I think it will grow in number so I’ve given it the 5th place. This list is mainly for my new readers not necessarily aware of my older posts, so enjoy!

2012 logo campaign

One of Daily Common Sense’s mission is to inform people. My most popular article is my article about 2012 and why it shouldn’t be feared. It eventually got divided in a series of 3 more articles about poles shift and planet X. I’ve received a lot of comments and positive feedback from the community and I think it’s time to go one step further about that 2012 scam. People are extremely scared and I received confidence from people who couldn’t sleep at night or go to work because of 2012 and the fear of not making it further than that date. I feel extremely good about the fact I helped so many people get on with their lives and this is all because of proper information. That’s what Daily Common Sense is about.

Now, I provide you with a couple 2012 logos you can use freely. You can resize them if you want to fit your needs but please don’t modify them because I would like them to be official 2012 logos. If you have a suggestion for a logo you would like to have, drop me an email and I will check with you. Use them on your blog, forum signature, MSN avatar, Facebook or whatever.

If you want to link the logo to my article, feel free to use the following link: 2012 explained - Why it shouldn’t be feared

Use them so that people can reach a good level of knowledge about 2012, I’m sick of hearing stupidities about this date and with the power of the community, we can fight!

SunI received a comment yesterday on one of my article about pole shifting. This was a reaction to the fact that I said recorded previous poles shifts on Earth took about 5,000 years to complete. This comment was that a magnetic pole shift happened on the Sun recently, which is a bigger mass than Earth and it didn’t take 5,000 years to complete. Thus, a pole shift can happen on Earth and real fast.

I’d like to clarify that. The answer I’d like to make official would be: If I can peel a banana, then why can’t I peel a strawberry if they both are fruits?

Unfortunately, while kind of funny, it isn’t really a proper answer. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense and can be an official answer…But let’s elaborate a bit. First of all, the Earth and Sun aren’t like the banana and the strawberry because they both aren’t planets. That’s the first mistake of the affirmation: comparing the Sun and the Earth like being two similar things. The Sun is a star, while the Earth is a planet. This makes a huge difference because the minute you know that, you can’t compare both equally.

The other important thing to consider is that the Sun is known to be on a 11 years cycle. What does this mean? Every 11 years, there’s a magnetic pole reversal happening on the Sun. Longer cycles have been recorded of course, but it’s usually an 11 years cycle. Does the Earth have such cycle? Luckily, no.

I’m not saying a pole shift can’t happen in a single day on Earth. While there’s not much chance of seeing that happening, who knows? The problem is “If it happens on the Sun it can happen on Earth”. This is not true and it is the kind of argument too often used in different domains. The Sun and Earth are two completely different things. Don’t forget that stars are mostly made of gas, while this ain’t the case of planets.

I continue to think that “If I can peel a banana, then why can’t I peel a strawberry if they both are fruits?” is the best answer to that argument. Because even if the Sun would’ve been a planet, there’s no way you can go with that kind of argument, affirmation being true or false.
